The multi-choice field lets your end client select one or more answers from a list of options you define, making it ideal for questions where more than one answer may apply.
What is the Multi-Choice Field?
The multi-choice field in Gatheroo presents clients with a predefined list of options, and allows them to select as many as apply. This differs from the Single Select field, which only allows one answer.
You define the list of options when building the field, and your client simply ticks all that are relevant to them.
When to Use a Multi-Choice Field In Gatheroo
Use the multi-choice field when a client may reasonably have more than one valid answer.
Common examples include:
- Services the client is interested in (e.g. “Tax Return, BAS, Bookkeeping”)
- Types of accounts held (e.g. “Savings, Transaction, Investment”)
- Industries or sectors that apply to the business
- Documents the client has available
- Languages spoken
If only one answer should be selected, use the Single Select field instead.
How to Add a Multi-Choice Field to Your Request
- In the Request Builder (Step 2), navigate to the section where you want the field

Multi-Choice Field Settings
- Mandatory: require the client to select at least one option before submitting
- Horizontal / Vertical display — choose whether the answer options appear in a vertical list (default) or spread horizontally across the page
- Conditional: show this field only when a specific Single Select answer has been given
Note: Multi-choice fields cannot be used to trigger Conditional Logic, only Single Select fields can act as a conditional logic trigger. They can be used as a follow up question.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a multi-choice field in Gatheroo?
A multi-choice field in Gatheroo presents clients with a list of predefined options and allows them to select all that apply.
Unlike the single select field, there is no limit on the number of available options a client can choose.
What is the difference between multi-choice and single select in Gatheroo?
A multi-choice field allows the client to select multiple answers.
A single select field restricts the client to choosing exactly one answer.
Single select fields can also be used to trigger conditional logic; multi-choice fields cannot.
Can I use a multi-choice field to trigger conditional logic?
No. Conditional logic in Gatheroo can only be triggered by a Single Select field.
However, any field type, including multi-choice, can be set to appear conditionally based on a Single Select answer.
Can I display multi-choice options horizontally in Gatheroo?
Yes. Use the Horizontal / Vertical display setting to control whether your answer options are listed vertically (stacked, one per line) or horizontally (side by side across the page).
How do I let clients select multiple options in a form?
Use a multi-choice or checkbox-style field that allows clients to tick more than one answer.
This is useful when a question has several valid responses, for example, ‘Which services are you interested in?’
In Gatheroo, the Multi-Choice field displays a list of options and clients can select as many as apply.
What is the difference between a checkbox field and a dropdown in an intake form?
A checkbox or multi-choice field lets clients select multiple answers from a visible list, while a dropdown typically limits them to just one selection.
Use multi-choice when several answers can all be true at once.
Use a single select when only one answer is correct.
Gatheroo offers both field types to cover both scenarios.
