The repeater field setting lets you ask a question once, and allows your client to add as many answers as they need.
Use them any time a client might have multiple items to list, for example:
- Past residential addresses
- Previous employers
- Directors / shareholders
- Bank accounts
- Children or dependants
Instead of creating several separate questions, you create one question with the “repeater setting” switched on, and the client can add, remove, and edit as many entries as they need.
1. What Is The Repeater Field Setting?
The repeater field setting will enable your clients to answer a normal question type (e.g. text, address, date, etc.) multiple times – we call it “Make this field repeatable“.
2. How to Add a Repeater Field to Your Request
You will find this option in your field setting when building your request.
Select the “Cog setting” icon on the top right of the field you would like to add the repeatable option to.
This will open the settings options. Depending on the field type you are working with, you may have more or fewer options.
The “Make this field repeatable” option will be toggled off by default and can easily be toggled to “on”.
Next, select “Save Changes” at the bottom of the settings screen.
Your field (or question) is now set up for your clients to be able to answer with the information they need to provide in full.
3. When Should You Use a Repeater Field??
Repeater fields give you a more streamlined way to request information, and for clients to answer correctly and in full.
Use a repeater field when:
- The number of answers is unknown or varies by client.
- You don’t want to clutter your request with many almost-identical questions.
Avoid using a repeater if there will always be a fixed number of answers, for example, for their current address only.
4. What Your Clients Will See
Using the Address field as an example, you may need to know all of the addresses they have lived in during the last 5 years.
In this case, you would add the address field once, and call it “Residential Addresses”
Enter your instructions to help guide them – for example: “Please enter each address you lived at during the last 5 years”
Your clients will be able to see your question and instructions, and add additional answers if required:
Clients will be able to add and remove additional answers as they complete your request.
5. Fields With Repeatable Options
Fields currently available with this repeatable option include:
- Phone numbers
- File uploads
- Single Text Line
- Address
- Name
6. Best Practices When Using Repeater Fields
Use clear, plural headings
e.g. Residential Addresses, Previous Employers, Company Directors.
Be explicit in your instructions
Include any time period or coverage requirement.
Example: “Please list all the addresses you have lived in during the last 5 years, with the dates you lived at each address.”
This reduces back-and-forth later.
Consider setting up the field as “Mandatory” to stop your clients from selecting “n/a” and bypassing the question altogether.
